A little dog out on the street,
Picked because she was so sweet,
Sent to try to learn to fly.

No lights, no windows, all alone.
Four nights of crying out in space,
A frightened animal erased,
A satellite in the unknown.

Was the pain too much to bear?
Was it cold out there?
Was it fear at every turn?
A whimper growing to a cry,
As you burned across the sky.

Now Laika haunts me in my sleep,
A childhood memory I keep,
A moment of sadness that lasted,
For 20 odd years
And a hundred odd days,
And it won't go away.

The greatest dog that ever lived,
The men she wanted to forgive,
The ones who sent her off to die.
